Bringing the Beach to You: A Sensory Activity for Those Who Can't Visit the Seaside
For those who can't make it to the beach, why not bring the beach to them? This simple sensory activity involves filling a wicker beach bag with items you would find on a day trip to the seaside and bringing it to someone's room. The idea is to provide the experience of the beach to those who are unable to leave their bed or room, evoking memories of personal experiences.

To make the most of this activity, take your time with each step.

What you will need:
1. A wicker beach bag
2. Sounds of the seaside
3. Shells, pebbles, small rocks, driftwood, seaweed
4. A small bag of sand
5. Flip flops and a sun hat
6. Damp swimming costume (preferably with a salty scent)
7. A deflated beach ball
8. Towel
9. Sunscreen
10. Ice cream

The activity:
1. Arrive at the room of your beach-goer and inform them that you will be taking them on a virtual day trip to the seaside.
2. Play background music or sounds of the seaside, such as waves crashing.
3. Hold their hand and sing a few songs, as if you were traveling to the beach.
4. Guide their hands over the wicker bag, letting them feel every bump and texture.
5. Place the sun hat on their head, reminding them of its purpose to keep the sun away.
6. Apply a small amount of sunscreen to their skin, encouraging them to take in its scent.
7. Sprinkle a little sand on their feet and slip on the flip flops, leaving some sand between their toes.
8. Encourage them to feel the shells, pebbles, and seaweed, as if they were exploring rock pools as a child.
9. Play a game to see who can blow up the beach ball.
10. Encourage them to feel the shape of the ball and listen to the sound of it being inflated.
11. Place the damp swimming costume in their hands and then use the towel to dry their hands, as if they had just come out of the sea.
12. No beach trip is complete without an ice cream, so serve them up their favorite flavor.
13. Once the ice cream is finished, ask them to help pack everything into the bag before sitting quietly and listening to the sounds of the seaside, marking the end of the session.
